MOGADISHU (Mareeg) – Somalia’s deputy parliament speaker, Mohamed Omar Dalha, has demanded Monday from Kenya to release the Somali lawmakers arrested in Nairobi immediately.
Kenyan police detained 300 Somali s during a sweep that followed a deadly protest at Nairobi's main mosque. About 20 Somali lawmakers are among the detainees.
Dalha asked the Kenyan government to free the legislators and also the other Somalis arrested in Nairobi on Sunday night.
The move by the Kenyan police came after hundreds of Muslim youths demonstrated after Friday prayers in and around Nairobi's main mosque compound, clashing with police as they demanded the release of a controversial Jamaican imam.
The General Service Unit and anti-terrorism Kenyan police carried out the swoop on Sunday night in Eastleigh district in Nairobi.
Mr. Dalha called for the Somali immigrants in Kenya to refrain from what can harm their dignity and also their businesses in the country.
Separately, Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya, Mohamed Ali said it was illegal to arrest a diplomatic person and accused the Kenyan police of defying the law.
